Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Happy Banana merino wool boxer briefs.

Product

What are Happy Banana boxer briefs made of?

100% premium Merino wool. No polyester, no nylon, no spandex, no synthetic blends of any kind. The waistband, stitching, and fabric are all natural. Even the tag is gone — we print the care instructions directly on the fabric.

Isn't wool itchy?

No. Merino wool fibers are much finer than traditional wool (17.5 microns vs 30+ microns). They bend against the skin rather than poke. Most customers say our boxer briefs feel softer than cotton. If you've only experienced scratchy wool sweaters, merino is a completely different material.

Will they smell?

The opposite. Merino wool has natural antimicrobial properties that resist odor-causing bacteria. Many customers wear them 2–3 days between washes without any smell. This isn't a chemical treatment — it's a natural property of the fiber.

How do they compare to cotton underwear?

Cotton absorbs moisture and stays wet. Merino absorbs up to 35% of its weight while still feeling dry to the touch. Merino regulates temperature (cotton doesn't). Merino resists odor (cotton doesn't). Merino wicks moisture away from skin (cotton holds it). The only advantage cotton has is price — and even that disappears when you consider how much longer merino lasts.

What's the inseam length?

4.2 inches. Long enough to prevent ride-up, short enough for comfort under any pants. We tested dozens of lengths before landing on 4.2" as the sweet spot.

Are they hypoallergenic?

Yes. Merino wool is naturally hypoallergenic and gentle against the skin. It naturally repels allergens and keeps you fresh throughout the day. Our boxer briefs are crafted to provide a gentle touch with zero chemical treatments — no dyes, no finishes, no irritants.

Can polyester underwear really affect testosterone?

Yes. Polyester and chemicals found in synthetic fabrics have been found to lower testosterone and even lead to infertility (PubMed PMID 1623716). Our boxer briefs are designed specifically for men's health — 100% merino wool means zero synthetic chemicals that can be detrimental to healthy T levels.

Sizing

How do I know my size?

Our sizing runs true to standard men's underwear sizes. If you're between sizes, we recommend sizing up for a more relaxed fit.

  • Small — Waist 28–30" (71–76 cm)
  • Medium — Waist 32–34" (81–86 cm)
  • Large — Waist 36–38" (91–97 cm)
  • Extra Large — Waist 40–42" (102–107 cm)

Do they stretch or shrink over time?

Merino wool has natural elasticity and retains its shape well. Follow the care instructions (cold wash, lay flat to dry) and they'll maintain their fit for years. They may shrink slightly if machine dried on high heat — avoid this.

Can I mix sizes in a multi-pack?

Currently, each pack ships in a single size. If you need different sizes, order separate packs. We're working on mixed-size packs for a future release.

Care

How do I wash them?

Machine wash cold on gentle cycle. Use organic detergent only (no bleach, no fabric softener) to preserve the wool's natural properties and longevity. Lay flat to dry or tumble dry on the lowest setting. Merino dries quickly and is naturally odor-resistant, so you don't need to wash after every wear.

Can I put them in the dryer?

Yes, but only on the lowest heat setting. High heat will cause shrinkage. We recommend laying flat to dry for maximum longevity. Air drying is better for the wool fibers and extends the life of the product.

How long do they last?

With proper care, 2–3+ years of regular wear. Merino wool is surprisingly durable. The fibers can bend 20,000+ times before breaking (cotton breaks after 3,200 bends). Our customers report they outlast synthetic underwear significantly.

The Science

What studies link polyester to fertility issues?

1. PubMed PMID 1623716 — Clinical trial showing polyester underwear caused complete azoospermia (zero sperm) in 140 days. The effect was reversible when subjects switched to cotton.

2. Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health — Study linking tight-fitting synthetic underwear to 25% lower sperm concentration due to elevated scrotal temperature (1–2°C increase).

3. ScienceDirect — Research on electrostatic fields generated by polyester fabrics across intrascrotal structures and their impact on spermatogenesis.

All studies are publicly accessible. We encourage you to read them yourself.

Is merino wool clinically proven to be better?

Merino wool has well-documented properties: temperature regulation, moisture wicking (up to 35% absorption), and natural antimicrobial activity. While there isn't a direct "merino vs. polyester for fertility" clinical trial, the mechanism is clear — merino eliminates the three risk factors identified in the studies: heat trapping, electrostatic generation, and chemical exposure from synthetic fibers.

Is this just fear marketing?

We cite peer-reviewed studies from PubMed, Harvard, and ScienceDirect. We link to every source. We encourage you to read the research yourself and form your own opinion. Our job is to give you a better option — what you do with the information is up to you.
